“The only person you should try and be better than is the person you were yesterday.”

The fast paced and ever-changing world in which we operate today requires a different kind of leader than yesterday – a leader who has the skills, mindsets and behaviours to operate successfully in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment.

Today’s leaders require the self awareness and understanding of their own patterns and default operating systems they turn to in times of stress and pressure. Coaching and leadership development helps individuals to shine a light on this part of themselves and to make conscious, intentional choices about the direction they want to head in and how to get there.

“Leaders don’t force people to follow them, they invite them on a journey.”

– Charles S. Lucas

Executive coaching is a one on one relationship focussed and tailored to the individual’s development plans alongside that of the organisation.  The executive coach partners with the individual to uncover the patterns, mindsets and behaviours that are blocking the individual from realising their fullest potential.  In this way, the coach challenges the individual (as appropriate) while providing support and feedback to create sustainable change and performance outcomes.

Executive coaching can be provided face to face or virtually using a variety of different apps.

Team coaching helps teams reach their fullest potential in working together towards a common outcome or goal and in building a higher performing team.  This is done through paying attention to both individual behaviours and to team collaboration, processes and dynamics.  In this way, individuals are supported by the systems within which they operate which is where sustainable transformation occurs.

Team coaching is best undertaken face to face with the coach and the team.  In some situations and contexts it may be appropriate and/or useful to undertake sessions using technology.

360 Feedback

A 360 feedback assessment is a great way to take stock of where you are as a leader and where you desire to be and operate from.  It enables you to clearly identify your strengths you can continue to enhance and your areas for development so that a tailored individual development plan can be created with clear goals and outcomes.

A 360 assessment can be undertaken as part of our Coaching and Leadership Development services or as a stand-alone experience.  Practitioners are currently certified in The Leadership Circle (TLC) and Emotional and Social Competencies Inventory (ESCI).

Coaching philosophy

  • Using a holistic approach – coaching around what matters both personally and professionally to each individual. Building conscious, intentional leaders by working with them as a whole person and empowering them to live into their fullest potential.
  • Sustainable growth – All coaching relationships imply some longevity and the learning takes place over time. Sessions take place on several occasions with the opportunity to sustain and build on previous learning through repeated reflection.
  • Taking responsibility – encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their own development, including seeking coaching and feedback on an ongoing basis. As a coach, I act in service of the individual focusing on what will provide the most value to them together with the organisational objectives (where applicable).
  • A strengths-based approach – coaching focuses as much on leveraging strengths as on improving development areas. In this way, individuals can really grow into the best version of themselves.
  • Adopting a growth/learner mindset – both myself as the coach and the individual being coached each holding a growth a mindset. This is about being open and curious to explore the situation to build self awareness and develop insight.

Refer to ICF Code of Ethics which forms the basis of the coaching approach.

Melissa provided Executive coaching at a time of transition in my workplace.  Her patient and supportive style allowed me to explore my thoughts and feelings in a safe environment and often led to revelations I would not have had without her assistance.  She provided frameworks and tools that helped me to stay focused and develop clear strategies to lead and communicate with my team more effectively, hold difficult conversations and provide constructive feedback.  I would not hesitate to recommend Melissa to anyone looking for a coach, her expertise will enhance your professional skilset and allow you to achieve your goals.”

“Melissa is a genuine and caring person who always seeks to understand a person from many perspectives. Melissa worked with me during a difficult time when I was adjusting to the pressure of the corporate environment. Her support as a coach was invaluable to me and allowed me to get through that tough period and continue to prosper. Her influence and impact on my life will be forever valuable to me and she inspired me to be the best person I can be – both for myself and for others.”

–  Todd L, New Zealand

“I have been working with Melissa for over a year now and have found her to be a crucial partner and guide in my professional and personal development. What I have found most beneficial is Melissa’s holistic approach to Development. Working on ‘the whole’, as opposed to what I would consider the high-level classic management and leadership approaches. It is this total view approach that has not only helped me become a much better leader, but also a better person, friend and father.

Melissa does all of this working within the typical traditional leadership coaching framework as well as integrating a number of creative, alternative approaches.

It is this creative approach to development and the ability to shed light on to some of the more deep-rooted behavioural factors that has made my time with Melissa educational, enlightening and just as importantly, enjoyable. I mean, who knew my identity was this big? I didn’t.”

“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you’ve always known you could be.”

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
